The 2014 canton cycling classic increases purse to $15,000 & boasts ‘equal purse’ for men’s & Women’s elite categories

Flyover Championship Cycling Series Opens Next Week with Chris Lillig Memorial Cup,
37th Annual Old Capitol Criterium

CANTON, SD – – April 17, 2014 – – Race organizers for the Canton Cycling Classic announced today that, since its inaugural race in 2012, local business support has broadened and community members view the race as a growing, “healthy lifestyle” event with wide appeal for all ages.  This broadened business support has led to an increase in the overall purse to $15,000, plus prizes, for this, the fifth and final race in the 2014 Flyover Championship Cycling Series.  Additionally, Canton Cycling Classic organizers are offering $5,000 for the Women’s Pro 1/2/3/4 Category, a purse equal to the Men’s Pro 1/2 Category.

Legacy Electronics Inc. CEO Jason Engle said, “We are pleased to sponsor a race that recognizes female athletes by providing a prize purse equal to the men’s.  Competitive cycling typically does not draw as many women riders as men, so this financial commitment should attract the elite women teams and help change that.”

The first race of the 2014 Flyover Championship Race Series begins next week in Iowa City, on April 26-27th, with the Chris Lillig Memorial Cup & the 37th Annual Old Capitol Criterium.  Riders will compete for a $10,000 purse, and additional funds will be raised, through donations at registration, for Mercy Hospice Care.  Registration is open now at https://www.bikereg.com/2014-canton-cycling-classic.

An awards celebration will cap the end of the race series after the Canton Cycling Classic in August, when the 2014 Flyover Champions are determined.
